Getting started…

Digitalize Fast or Die Slowly

Everybody talks about Digital, but so often, people talk about very different things. What seems to be clear is: Becoming Digital or not is not a choice, it’s inevitable for a business to survive. However, there are many different ways of achieving this, and a business should position itself wisely. To do so, the interaction and exchange with others can be extremely helpful. New ideas, new business models, and rising star businesses are born from cross-industrial innovation hubs, roundtables, congress visits, or other forms of exchanging information outside your point of view that promote out-of-the-box thinking and innovative ideas. This website aims at providing an open platform to enable such exchanges and discussions.

Proven Frameworks and Approaches Help to Mature – Enterprise Architecture can provide some of them

Generally speaking, there are three components of Digital that need to be considered jointly to enable a business to use its capability. These are technology, process, and people. Technology includes the IT infrastructure, systems, and applications of a company and serves as the foundation to enable Digitalization, just like you need a bowl, a mixer, and an oven to make a cake. Processes are needed to achieve a defined outcome and to ensure a certain quality level over time. Having all the ingredients for a cake is not sufficient to ensure success. You will also need to know what to do with the ingredients and in which order. The third component people do not merely refer to the digital skillsets, but also the culture, the mindset, and ultimately the intrinsic motivation. If you stir your cake batter for 15 minutes and you don’t care about the result, you might not do it effectively at all, and clumps will remain. To establish such digital capabilities, one needs to get the concepts right. This is the foundational advice of every consultant and is a pre-requisite for a structured digital transformation. Enterprise Architecture, as the enabler of a structured IT organization, covers many useful tools and frameworks to support a digital transformation and to mature as an organization. Many of those frameworks and concepts will be explained on this website and should also be critically discussed and evaluated.

Big and Small Success Stories Worth Looking at

Different companies have different challenges to succeed in those capability areas. Some companies are struggling to find a way out, while some have already concurred their obstacles and are truly embracing the benefits of Digital transformation. Businesses that are open to learning from such success stories and understanding what it means for their situation, will have a significantly higher chance to achieve their Digitalization goals and create their own success stories. The market leaders often provide us with excellent opportunities to understand the lessons they learned on their way to the top.

One can learn from market leaders and industry experts. Moreover, one can also learn from innovative startups, students, early market adopters, and tech insiders, which are often much closer to the pulse of the market. If you are one of them, please don’t hesitate to share your ideas here, and help us all learn and benefit mutually from each other.

How to Benefit?

On this website, I will share my knowledge of Enterprise Architecture, on related approaches, frameworks, and concepts, and I will evaluate them from my point of view. I would also like to collect inspiring content about digital transformations, such as ideas, concepts, hot topics, and success stories that one can learn from and that help to think further, and that encourage discussions. I believe that your experiences, comments, and ideas will help all of us to understand, anticipate, and prepare better for the future and ultimately manage our own Digital transformation.

  1. Thanks a lot for the great platform! I’m a management master student and I’m currently researching on the topic: how can digitalization influence the company performance. I think we can definitely exchange some ideas and findings! Looking forward to exchanging via this platform!

  2. Hi Michael, thanks a lot for your comment! Your research topic seems quite interesting; have you already made up your mind on how to measure the influence of Digitalization and also the company performance? (e.g. Share prices, revenues, costs, innovation/ patent registrations, number of customers etc.)

They all have their pros and cons and your choice should depend on whether you can control the other variables having an impact on your chosen one; e.g. share prices of companies with a high digital maturity are often highly volatile and might have such a great noise that you cannot see the Digitalization influence anymore. Sometimes, prices are even impacted by single interviews or tweets – see latest Amazon-Trump example (https://www.reuters.com/article/us-amazon-com-stocks/amazon-shares-fall-after-report-trump-wants-to-curb-its-power-idUSKBN1H42HG) or Musk-Tesla (https://www.reuters.com/article/us-tesla-results/the-price-of-cutting-off-analysts-for-tesla-its-2-billion-idUSKBN1I32UC)
Cost information might be more stable over time, however, the impact of digitalization would be rather on a Capex / Opex shift rather than on the total costs. Data on the degree of innovation is hard to grasp and the number of registered patents would reflect the degree of innovation only to some extend.

Happy to receive more comments from you so that we can dig deeper into the topic!
